Healthy Lungs. As obvious as it may sound our lungs are pretty important, we need oxygen for every cell in our body to do what it is supposed to effectively, so why is it that many of us (and yes that includes myself) do not do our utmost to take care of them?
The body’s own innovation at its finest
We know that the typical adult with healthy lungs takes 15 to 20 breaths a minute, which leads to around a staggering 20,000 breaths a day. Our bodies accomplish this without a second thought.
Pretty astounding engineering when you think about it.
What are the top risks for our lungs in everyday environments?
Yet these 20,000 breaths a day are not as pure as you may hope.
Carried in the oxygen of our atmosphere are all those nasty pollutants from car exhausts and factories.
The Clean Air Act of 1970 has done a fantastic job of improving the quality of air in many countries around the world, air pollution still causes some serious roadblocks in our mission for healthy lungs.
Besides the car exhaust fumes and factory emissions, our individual choices have a significant effect on our lung health. Choosing to smoke and being overweight are two of the biggest risks. We are not medical professionals, so whilst we can suggest tips to improve your overall health, they are just that, tips and guidance based on our research and experiences.
Thinking that if you stay inside you’ll be better off? Sorry to say that if you fail to ventilate properly, control the temperature of your home and be mindful of the chemicals you use when you clean, that your indoor air quality may also be causing your lungs some issues.
It’s not all doom and gloom though! There are some easy changes you can make to improve things and have happy, healthy lungs.
Stop smoking
In the UK alone around 9 million adults still smoke, with two-thirds of smokers starting before the age of 18, but if you quit smoking your lungs will actually begin to naturally repair themselves after just 48 hours.
Start exercising
Being active directly contributes to improving the muscles that aid breathing and circulation. It also helps in reducing issues such as anxiety and stress so that you can really breathe easy.
Protect yourself from airborne particulates
Healthy lungs are at risk both in the home and at work, pet dander, dust mites, brick dust or wood dust. It is really important to make sure you have the right tools to combat these risks.
For our industrial customers, or DIY enthusiasts, be sure to check out our current range of dust extraction equipment.

Improve indoor air quality
Open up those windows wide and don’t bother making your bed!
Dust mites love warm, dark and humid environments. When you make your bed after getting up, you are allowing them the ideal factor to thrive. So roll back the cover and let your sheet and mattress breathe during the day.
When you are home, don’t be afraid to crack open the windows and enjoy the beauty of fresh air and bird song, one of life’s small pleasures.
Until next time,
The V-TUF Family.
